Texas A&M University and College Station, Texas…

2012-03-29 Bryan Texas 017

2012-03-29 Bryan Texas 009Having lived in College Station for 34 years while going to school and eventually working for Texas A&M University we were always looking for things to do. Many people who visit this town have the same dilemma. What to do besides eat some great Mexican food :) The biggest problem is that there really isn’t a whole lot to do as a tourist in this area. Even the squirrels didn’t look real exited…

As  I mentioned before one can visit the number one tourist attraction in the area – the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. In my previous post I mentioned the allure of the downtown Bryan revitalization. What I haven’t mentioned yet as a place to visit is Texas A&M university itself.

The sixth-largest university in the United States – Texas A&M University enrolls more than 50,000 students. One of the highlights for most visitors is touring the campus proper but there are some other points of interest that we recommend you visit here. Below is a list of some of those places to see as a visitor to Teas A&M:

  • 2012-03-29 Bryan Texas 057The Memorial Student Center – the hub of student activity
  • The Bonfire Memorial – memorial in remembrance of the Texas A&M bonfire that collapsed and took the lives of twelve aggies ON 11-18-1999
  • The Student Rec Center – A state of the art recreation facility with an indoor 43 foot rock climbing wall
  • Kyle Field -Texas A&M football stadium
  • Blue Bell Stadium -Texas A&M baseball stadium
  • Sam Houston Corp of Cadets Center – a museum of Aggie artifacts including an extensive gun collection
  • Century Oak Tree (pictured in the header) – many marriage proposals and couples pictures have happened here

Untitled-2The campus is huge so make sure you bring a water bottle along and plan to spend the good part of a day touring the campus. Bring your frisbees as well because there is a fairly nice disk golf course at the Research Park complete with a few water hazards. OUntitled-1r you can bring your real golf clubs and play at the 18 hole campus golf course. Research Park is a popular picnic and dog walk park.

While I stated that there isn’t lot to do as a tourist one may wonder why we stayed in this area as long as we did. We have lots of good memories of this area and we met a lot of really wonderful people with whom we had a lot of great times with. Then when children came into our lives we found it to be a great place to raise them. It has been really special to revisit these ties to our past and we plan to enjoy these last few days here as we plan to leave this area on the 20th…

  1. We visit college/university campuses sometimes when on the road. We went to the Citadel after reading your blog. And we just took in parts of of Florida and Florida State. I am not sure there are many that I would truly go out of my way to see, but they can be quite interesting when you are in the area. We once stumbled upon the mineral exhibit at Michigan Tech University in the remote former copper country of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was fabulous

  2. We love A & M's campus. We spent a couple of hours just walking around. They were having a spring baseball game, and it was free. We watched a bit of it. The kids and adults were all very friendly. Great place to visit. ~wheresweaver

  3. I spend many days and miles there as a sales person. It is a lovely campus. Unfortunately, I always think of the big main parking garage because I never could find my car :)

  4. I really like college towns, just have a great feel. Sometimes I would rather just take in the local flavor rather than do the "tourist" thing.
