A day in Tucson, AZ…

Tucson AZ 001

We enjoyed our stay at the Voyager RV Resort and as I said earlier all we can say is wow!!! This huge resort is only $22.00 with taxes included at the Passport America rate and has 4 pools and several hot tubs including the largest one we have ever seen. Since we are only here two days we wanted to go visit a few spots around Tucson and also have time to come back and enjoy our park.

First on our agenda was the San Xavier Del Bac Mission which is about 9 miles south of Tucson. This mission, located on the Tohono O’Odham Indian Reservation is a beautiful historic Catholic church that is well worth the short drive south of town. No matter what religious affiliation you may be this is a stop you should make. It is said to be a “blend of Moorish, Byzantine and late Mexican Renaissance architecture” and it was built from 1783-1787 by the Franciscan Fathers Juan Bautista Velderrain and Juan Bautista Llorenz.

This wonderful National Historic Landmark, is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Tucson AZ 024Next on our list was a bicycle tour of the University of Arizona,. We love to visit the campuses of Universities across the USA and especially ones that have a huge softball presence. No college has a bigger softball presence than does the Arizona Wildcats. We found a link on line that shows places where you can park free on campuses so we shose a spot on the corner of 1st St. and Campbell Ave. Once parked we unhooked our bikes and off we went towards campus.

imageThe UofA campus is a beautifully landscaped bike friendly campus. Like the Arizona State campus the football stadiums was also under construction for future expansion, we assumed. What a gorgeous campus to see while riding your bikes. Everything would have been perfect but a railroad track snuck out and ate Sharon’s front bike tire resulting in her being catapulted from her cushy bike seat. Sprawled out on the ground I was worried she may have hurt herself but she sprang back up almost as quickly as she hit the ground. The worst injury it appeared was her pride as we continued on hurriedly before anymore gawkers stopped by. Whew, that was a close call…

Tucson AZ 002Once back to the car we stowed the bicycles and decided that after Sharon’s brief encounter with the ground that we should return back to the park and soak in the hot tub instead of partaking in a planned hike in the mountains just north of town. The hot tub was delightful…

The next day we headed to Phoenix, AZ to visit with some of our softball friends we had fun with when our daughter went to Campbell University. We visited with them over a few beers and carne asada tacos and shared stories from the past as well as about retirement in general. After a fun evening it was home to the Foothills West RV Resort and the next morning has me up early planning for a longer day of about 250 miles where we will spend a night on the road before stopping at Oasis RV Resort for three nights this weekend in Las Vegas… Maybe a morning hot tub visit before the longer drive…

  1. Hope you took the tour of San Xavier. Our guide was absolutely wonderful. So much information, we couldn't remember half of it.

We enjoyed our visit to the campus also. Very clean and beautiful landscape.

Be sure to hit Freemont Street. Show begins at 7 and every hour after that. Just amazing. Enjoy.

  5. We hope Sharon is ok. She may have a few more aches and pains in the morning. :(

We visited San Xavier this winter. It really is lovely. We'll have to check out your campground next time. We heard so many good things about it from other campers too.

  7. Hot tub sounds like just the thing before a big trip and after a fall. So glad it wasn't a fall like Terri took recently in Texas.
