Driving around Lake Tahoe…

Reno and Lake Tahoe NV 014

Reno and Lake Tahoe NV 038One thing that we just had to do was to drive around Lake Tahoe to see it from every possible angle. For those that don’t know Lake Tahoe is the second deepest lake (1645 feet deep) in the United States and it is the tenth deepest in the world. The only lake deeper in the USA is Crater Lake in Oregon.

To drive around a lake that is 22 miles long and 12 miles wide takes a bit of time Reno and Lake Tahoe NV 031but it makes for a drive well worth the time and effort. The loop is about 150 miles and with lots of stops it makes for an excellent long day trip. At one time Lake Tahoe had clarities reaching 100 feet in depth but the latest recordings have its clarity at about 70 feet deep. Nonetheless there were places where it was difficult to distinguish where the edge of the water was as the rocks on shore were as apparent as the ones submerged.

The drive took us through lots of small towns that appeared to be mostly seasonal in nature. The largest town we saw was South Lake Tahoe in Reno and Lake Tahoe NV 017California. However, the largest buildings were at Stateline, Nevada on the border as it is the last place in Nevada to see high rise casinos before entering California.

Every pullout and every corner with a vista provided postcard like views of Lake Tahoe. There are spots we pulled out where we would just “oooh and ahhh” at the landscapes before us. The best pullout area was at Inspiration Point overlooking Emerald Bay State Park. Looking down we could see million dollar yachts and weekenders in their kayaks paddling around the Emerald Bay.

Reno and Lake Tahoe NV 028This is a must place to visit and we fee it should be on everyone’s bucket list who yearns to see the best of the best sights in the USA. We only have a few more days here in Reno, NV and then we will head north into California and stop for a few days in Likely, CA.  Next will be a stay at the Tule Lake Fairgrounds in CA to visit the Lava Beds National Monument.

From Tule Lake we will head north to Oregon and stay for 5-6 days at Collier Memorial State Park to see the deepest lake in the USA, Crater Lake and then we have five days booked at The Cove Palisades State Park in Oregon. That is about as far as the plans go for now… we hope to see you down the road…

  1. When I was in my 20s and vacationing in Lake Tahoe, we always took one day to drive around the lake. That entire area is beautiful, and smells sooo good. :)
