San Diego State University…

There are two large universities here in San Diego and San Diego State University is not to be confused with the University of San Diego. It was established 1897 and currently enrolls over 31,300 students. A good sized campus of nearly 300 acres has this urban school perfectly situated in San Diego and what a great spot to be a student.

They call themselves Aztecs and sport the colors black, scarlet and gold. This NCAA Division 1 school has many varsity sports and is in the Mountain West Conference. And as many of you know we just had to take a walk in the campus to get a little energy and good vibe from of the students.

102_9766Parking on the campus was not free since we didn’t go on a Sunday but the charge was only $1.00 per hour so for a couple bucks we could walk anywhere we wanted. We started our walk on the side of campus with all the athletic facilities. The facilities of SDSU are really nice with their soccer field and the men’s baseball stadiums, named for baseball great Tony Gwinn, as the nicest facilities in our opinion. The Aztec football team places their games in Qualcomm Stadium so there is no need for another stadium on campus.

As you may have read in a previous blog we attended a football game where the Aztec’s lost a close game to San Jose State University. We had a real fun time at the game from when the mascot, the Aztec warrior , led their team on the field to the final seconds of the end of the game.

Once we had finished touring the athletic fields we wandered around campus in search of the Rec Center, Student Center, and a few of the older buildings on campus such as Scripps Cottage and the Hardy Memorial Tower pictured to the right. Lots of energy was felt on campus as the students hurried between classes while 103_0024we lingered to watch and remember the days when we were the ones running to and fro between buildings.

We always enjoy walking around campuses… Not only103_0023 for the architecture and beauty of most colleges but we also love the gardens and the history that is offered as well. SDSU was no exception and a really enjoyable way to spend a morning or afternoon. And if you are there in the afternoon a local college hangout called Effin’s Pub is just the place to score a nice crafted beer. And if you show up on a Tuesday for happy hour they have one buck tacos and $3.00 micro drafts… I enjoyed an cold Kona Fire Rock IPA while Sharon enjoyed her Dos Equis…Another great day in sunny San Diego!

    1. Just because UCSD doesn't have a football team, it's 30 thousand students would argue the point that there are only two "big" universities in SD.

  3. If you are interested in visiting smaller schools you might try Point Loma University, it's limited to about 2,500 students but sits on the ocean and is beautiful.
