Sunset Cliffs, Point Loma Nazarene University and brunch with a long lost cousin…

Sunset Cliffs 007

Mission Bay 027We started this day by going over to Shelter Island to meet with Sharon’s cousin John and his wife Penny from Michigan. Sharon hadn’t seen her cousin in over 35 years but had been corresponding with him off and on through the years. He has also been following our blog so when he found out we were still going to be in San Sunset Cliffs 002Diego when he was going to be visiting here, he set up a brunch date with us. Where was lunch? At Red Sails on Shelter Island. Nice little spot over looking the harbor and all the ships. Two hours flew by after a lot of great conversation and a good Denver Omelet, After hugs and pictures, we promised  faithfully not to let another 35 years pass before we meet up again somewhere down the road.

Since we were already near Point Loma and we still had most of the afternoon available we headed over to Sunset Cliffs. This is a great location for an afternoon

walk with some spectacular vistas of the ocean and cliffs below. Included were a PLNU 023few multi million dollar homes providing us plenty to see.

We parked at Sunset Hills Natural Park and took a walk along the ocean-front looking out over the wind and water eroded cliffs. The cliffs rise over 60 feet above the Pacific surf and is a popular area for surfers. A few were out surfing and must be diehards since it doesn’t look easy skirting the surf board down the cliffs to the water’s edge. Looking up the steep hillsides are magnificent homes with stellar views of the Pacific. And not far away is Ocean Beach, an older coastal community.

PLNU 011We went back to the car and went in search of Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU). One of our anonymous blog readers mentioned it as a place we would be very interested in and they were they were right! PLNU offers more than 60 areas of study and serves more than 3,500 students. With colors of Green and Gold along with Roary the Sea Lion as their mascot I am sure it is a blast to attend one of their athletic events as well.PLNU 020

This Christian college was founded inPLNU 012 1902, originally as Pacific Bible College, later it became Pasadena College and finally Point Loma Nazarene University. Nazarene churches are known for their outreach, for their service to those in need, and for addressing issues of social justice. What a beautiful campus this is and what a wonderful place it must be to be as student there. Sitting on the outside patio of the Student Union overlooking the cliffs and the ocean while enjoying the sea breeze off the Pacific Ocean seemed a studiers delight.

Whoever the anonymous tipster was, thanks for the tip as we really enjoyed our visit to PLNU and thanks John and Penny for a wonderful brunch at the Red Sail Inn…

  1. We know the area well. Our daughter lives two blocks from the cliffs and I have walked their dog at sunset many times.

  2. You are quite welcome for the PLNU tip, my boys went there and didn't want to come home (in fact one still lives in SD).
I would not have been anonymous if I could have figured out how not to be...I'm not too computer literate :).
