Freightliner School is in our future…

Rockport and nearby 071

Rockport and nearby 054We have been in Rockport for just over two weeks now and feel as we have have done all the things we planned to do while we visiting this part of Texas. Normally that would be good news however we still have two more weeks left before our month is up. The sense of hitch itch is getting to me so I have started planning what we will do upon our departure from Rockport.

The one certainty on our immediate agenda is a stay at Gaffney, South Carolina where I have enrolled in the Freightliner School. I know I have been on the road for nearly two years but I am certain there is still plenty I don’t know about our Rockport and nearby 058motorhome and hope to glean some pearls of wisdom from the instructors of this highly rated class in Gaffney.

From Rockport we will either go to Goliad State Park for a few nights or go on to Shiner, Texas. Goliad promises to be an interesting little Texas town to explore for a few days and Rockport and nearby 072Shiner, Texas has the Spoetzl Brewery nearby. The Spoetzl Brewery is of course where Shiner beer is brewed and a tour of the brewery along with ample samples makes for a fun visit to this town.

Next on the Agenda is a short weekend stay at Lockhart State Park where we will take the grandkids on a “camping” trip. They of course are looking forward to this camping trip as are we… It will be the last time we see them for a while as we head east this Spring. After Lockhart State Park we will revisit the town of College Station, Texas. This, of course, is the town we both retired from and anytime we are nearby it is always fun to revisit with many of our dear friends as well as our favorite frequented haunts.

Rockport and nearby 057When we leave Texas we plan to make our first stop at a place I have heard many good reviews about – Betty’s RV Park in Abbeville, Louisiana. After several days stay there we will move on to New Orleans where we will stay at Bayou Segnette State Park. The park is close to the Algier’s Ferry which will take us the short distance across the river and drop us off real close to the French Quarter. Our new friends Holly and Randy from Wisconsin are meeting us at the park and we will be neighbors as they were able to book the site right next to us. This will surely Rockport and nearby 065add to the fun we will have!  We are really looking forward to our stays in Louisiana…

From Louisiana we have no real plans for now as we will determine later (maybe due to weather) whether we will hug the coastline and retrace our trip to Savannah, Georgia or head northward into Alabama and Tennessee. Only time will tell… We do have to be in GaffneyRockport and nearby 074 for the start of the Freightliner school that begins on April 11th…

The pictures in today’s blog are of sunrises and sunsets taken while staying here in Rockport, Texas. I must admit that the sunrises here are as grand as any I have seen anywhere. When combining these exquisite sunrises with some freshly ground coffee perked for the day.... and well… life is pretty tough!

  1. It doesn't take long to see all there is to see in Rockport/Fulton area, especially when yo have been there before.Usually two weeks in an area is enough for us. then the hitch itch sets in again.
    Enjoy your touring.

  2. When will you be in New Orleans? We plan to go the first week in March. Looking at Bayou Segnette State Park. How far is the ferry from the campground? Does the ferry run 24/7?

Also looking at Pontchartrain Landing as another friend recommended it. This RV park has a $5 pp shuttle into New Orleans. Do you know anything about it?

    Thanks,
    Susan & Bob

    1. we will be there the last week in March most likely, the ferry is not very far and has free parking at the pick up point, the ferry runs every day from 6 am - 12:15 am, and departs from the New Orleans side at :15 and :45 past the hour. It departs from the West Bank on the hour and :30 past the hour.

    3. I double checked and found that the parking is $5 at an adjacent private parking lot, the fee for the ferry is $1 for cars and free for passengers.

  4. You will have a grand time at Betty's. if you want a great swamp boat ride, ask Betty for a suggestion. Ours was great.

If you haven't read "The Garden of Good and Evil," do read it before you get to Savannah. True story, easy reading. You will enjoy visiting the places in the book.

Another great choice...Bayou Segnette State Park. Great park. We drove into New Orleans every day. The park is very close and the traffic not bad at all.

  6. Great to hear your future travel plans and choice of parks in Louisiana. We will be in the real Big Easy in late April. Doesn't sound like we will cross paths on our trek westward. Boo-hoo. You and Vic can compare notes on Freightliner School. He likes his hat.

  7. We enjoyed Betty's, but not as much as we thought we would. Still, we tell everyone they have to stay there at least once.

One thing you have to do is ask Betty how to get to Suire's restaurant. Authentic Cajun food in a very laid back atmosphere.

We also stayed at the Bayou Segnette State Park, and took the ferry over ( I think you have to pay for parking, or maybe we did because we parked close to the ferry ).

Will offer you more tips as the time gets closer ... lol.

    Take care ... TnT

  8. I especially like the first and last photo ... clouds add a great dimension to sunset/sunrise images.

We were scheduled for Camp Freightliner in March, but changed plans so we can meet up with Mui's sister in NOLA instead, so we pushed Gaffney to July ... will look forward to reading your impressions of the class.

  9. That hitch itch always gets me too. I think we will head out East next fall so we will have to gleen your site for places to camp. When your at the brewery have a Shinerbock for me! Haven't been to that brewery and you know us we never pass up good beer or breweries. Good luck with the planning, thats always my job and it takes some work but its worth it to find the right spots. :)

  11. We learned a lot at Camp Freightliner. (Gotta warn you though, that first day can run quite late -- like 8PM.) It's also a great time to get service, if you need it.
    Safe travels!
