Auburn, Alabama…

Auburn, AL 001

imageBefore leaving rainy Biloxi we made one more casino run to the only casino in town that is exclusively smoke free. It was really refreshing to sit at a casino bar and enjoy a cold adult beverage without having to inhale the smoke of a bad cigar from a neighbor seated nearby. We didn’t get any free play at this casino but still managed to have a great time on not much money. Sharon even hit her first four of kind on video poker!

The next morning we left Martin Lake Resort before 9:00 am on Friday which is pretty early for us. We did so since we were planning to drive about 275 miles which is Auburn, AL 005considerably longer than we normally drive in one day. We couldn’t really find anything that we wanted to explore for a few days any closer but when we found Chewacla State Park just outside of Auburn Alabama we knew we could have fun exploring this state park and Auburn University.

Most of the day on Friday was simply getting to Chewacla State Park but after we got all set up we still had a bit of daylight to run into the town of Auburn for some quick sightseeing. We figured that we would at least cruise through the university and see what we wanted to do the next day. After speaking with a security guy I discovered that there was some free parking near the athletic facilities so we found a spot and pulled in.

Auburn, AL 009From there we took a stroll around the Auburn football stadium where they have statues of each of their Heisman Trophy winners. We also checked out their baseball and softball facilities. Like all SEC schools their facilities are top notch. They have a softball three game series with Ole Miss this weekend and if we have some time to kill we may even take in a game, But for the time being we decided to head back to the spacious camp site to grill some of the shrimp we bought while at Betty’s in Louisiana. All I can say was it was pretty darned good… I guarantee…

  1. Seeing that poster of Bo Jackson reminded me that I recently watched a segment of ESPN Sports Science where they named him "The Greatest Athlete of All Time". His 40 time at the NFL combine was 4.12, more than an tenth of a second faster than the next fastest time ever. And, he could drive fastballs out of the ballpark with his hand eye coordination and strength.

  2. Fun. My folks lived in Opelika and my Mom worked for Auburn. And we have a house on Lake Martin...isn't it cool! Thanks for the Auburn photos...

    1. Cool indeed - now a question... I need to replace a faulty tire - any recommendations in this area for who I should call?

  3. Can't help you with the tire question, but we especially loved this post as we're Auburn Alum (Class of 72), second generation. Wayne's parents met on the steps of Sanford Hall. This is where we spend football season every year. There's free boondocking in the campus fields so we go there for game weekends and tailgate with 50,000 close friends. We've spent many weeks at Chewacla State Park too. Try the paved riding/walking path that goes along Shell Toomer. Don't forget to have a lemonade at Toomers Drug Store. War Eagle!

  4. I have a brother in Valley AL...I can try to find out if he has anyone. He owns rentals in Auburn so maybe he will know someone. This is a tire on your rig, correct?

  8. Wow, on the road before 9. You guys are something. I think 250 miles is our farthest push. I hate those long days. Sports hero statues on a college campus is a new one on me.
