Lefleur’s Bluff State Park in Jackson, MS…

imageAfter about a 170 mile drive from Abita Springs, Louisiana, we arrived at Lefleur’s Bluff State Park on Lake Mayes in Jackson, MS. We chose this state park since it is actually within the city limits of Jackson and only about a mile from I-55. This will give us a chance to check out another state capitol.

As we pulled off of I-55 we noticed my GPS wasn’t correct since the address it had for the state park did not take us to the campground. Fortunately Sharon had the GPS running on her android phone which apparently knew where we were going. When we found the un-manned entrance we were a bit concerned with the entry as it was pretty tight and had steel poles restricting access. We barely squeezed Abbey through and then drove about a mile and half to our site on Lake Mayes. It is a really pretty campground in the middle of a city. It's quiet, green and campers can hear the sounds of nature all around…

Lefleur’s Bluff State Park is a 305-acre park and is named for Louis LeFleur, a French-Canadian explorer who established a trading post on the banks of the Pearl River in the late 1700s. Also the city of Jackson was originally known as LeFleur's Bluff. Lake Mayes resulted from a river meander that has since been cut off. There are 28 sites available for tent and RV camping equipped with water and electrical hook-ups but no sewage. We are situated right next to the bathhouse with hot showers which makes not having a sewer connection so bad. And all this for only $18 a night simply can’t be beat.

We discovered a disc golf course on the opposite side of the lake from our camp. We checked it out one day but the course appears to get little use. There were no T-boxes and no signage to tell us which hole was to be played in which order. That didn’t stop us from creating our own course layout using the baskets we could find.

We also drove into town and checked out the Rainbow co-op which is small but has a nice  selection of organic produce and all sorts of bins full of goodies. It is in the more trendy part of Jackson known as Fondren and we also found a Hops and Habanas store where we sampled a few craft beers and selected a nice IPA brewed in St Louis Missouri for a growler fill.

We are here a few more days and then we have to decide where to go next… probably will head up the Natchez Trace to Tupelo, MS…

  1. Check out today's New York Times travel for an article on what to do while in the part of MS you are in right now. Stay away from the rain.

  2. We have often wondered about the state park where you are staying. It looks nice. There is a great COE park near Tupelo that we hope to revisit some day.

  3. Ah the GPS gets us lost story. We tossed ours after too many of those. Glad you made it, the park looks nice. It's so hot here in Virginia that my first thought when I saw you were in Mississippi was that you must be boiling but you don't look like it.

  4. Hey, Hey Duke and Mrs. -- TM and I did a slow southerly route on our motorcycles a few summers back and rode the Natchez from Franklin, TN down to MS. Great times!
