Last Days and Messina Hof Winery…

RV Park Haven and Lockhart SP 039

Wow! Our month in College Station flew by! Before we knew it, our son, his wife and the grandkids left by car back to their home in San Antonio and Katie's boyfriend Brooks flew back to North Carolina.   We were originally scheduled to leave Sunday but Katie was staying until Monday…oops! It was a little bad planning on my part but it was easily fixed by adjusting our upcoming reservations in Lockhart and Canyon Lake.

We did pack up our rig and left Holiday RV Park in College Station to move a whole mile north to a new RV park in town called RV Haven Park where we planned to stay until Wednesday. I will discuss how this came to be in our next blog (and it will be the final about College Station).

We settled into our site and now that everyone else had left, we asked Katie what she would like to do and she wanted to go play some disc golf. We found a nice little park that was mostly open with shade from some large trees and a small meandering creek providing the only water hazard. We had fun tossing the discs around and we were sure glad there weren’t any larger bodies of water as we found the creek on several occasions and had to fetch our discs from the water.

After disc golf it was nearing happy hour so we took Katie to one of the best happy hour deals in town at the Grub Burger Bar. During happy hour they offer two buck craft pints so I ordered a nice Karbach Hopidillo IPA while Kate and Sharon opted to order the other happy hour special. They chose one of the signature alcoholic milkshakes to share. It had vanilla ice cream, peanut butter and chocolate along with chocolate vodka as the liquor. It came with lots of whipped cream on top as well as a big peanut butter cookie. It tasted just like a chocolate/peanut butter milkshake and was pretty good, but I still liked my craft beer better.

Her last evening we headed over to the Rough Draft Whiskey Bar which boasts an incredible Sunday happy hour which includes all their Texas Crafts for $2 per pint. We met several of my friends there as well and Katie seemed to really enjoy her last evening in town. The next morning we packed her up and drove her the hour and half over to Houston’s airport. Bidding our farewells we left Houston and headed on home. Of course we had to make a detour to stop at Costco and Trader Joes to stock up on some of our favorites.

imageOur last day in town I took Sharon over to the Messina Hof Winery for their winery tour. We had a great little tour where we learned about the winery and met a few very friendly staff.. Our favorite wine was the Paulo Texas Red Blend which at $44 per bottle was way out of my normal wine price range but we still bought a glass of it to savor after the tour as we lingered on the premises. The winery and the adjacent “hotel” were worth the visit and we would highly recommend the tour to anyone visiting Bryan/College Station.

It really has been fun to return to our old home town as tourists because it really has a lot to offer in the way of friendly people, delicious food and a wide range of entertainment!

  2. The milkshake sounds wonderful but you could keep the vodka. Sure nice to have family around for a little while.

  3. We always enjoy returning to our hometown of Ashland, Oregon for a visit -- but we also find it a bit overwhelming to try to fit in visits with all of our friends and take care of stuff that needs to be done while we're there. Seems like you had a great time! Where to next?
