Cruising the Back Roads in the Texas Hill Country…

One of the fun things we like to do when visiting the Texas hill country is drive the back roads to see what there is to see. Sharon heard about an interesting little Texas honky tonk so I  mapped out a nice hill country loop drive that would take us by it around happy hour time.

With this exceptionally wet spring the wildflowers continue to bloom by the roadsides. There is a change however as the bluebonnets and paintbrush are giving way to the yellow flowers of the Composite family. Now we see more Indian Blanket and Mexican Hats than anything blue or red…

Driving the back roads also meant we might have an opportunity to spy some of the native fauna in the hills. We happened upon a freshly born fawn who immediately began to suckle her mom. As Sharon said as we were watching them “cuteness abounds.”

As we passed the Blanco River we headed toward Albert Texas also known as Albert Freaking Texas. It was described to us as a knockoff of Luckenbach so we wanted to  see for ourselves. It indeed has an old dancehall but no longer has a post office as it was recently torn down. There is a neat little tavern alongside the road where we stopped in to partake in in a cold Shiner Bock beer brewed in Texas. Interestingly we met a guy at the bar from Stonewall, Texas which has the nickname “peach capital of Texas”.  He is one of the Burg’s who has sold peaches at Burg’s Corner for 3 generations and my mom bought peaches from them back when I was in High School in San Antonio….small world! Peach season has begun so we may take another drive to Stonewall!

Completing our loop as we passed through Kendalia Texas where we found a new brewery in the hill country, lucky us! We stopped in to try the brews at Rough Diamond Brewery and are happy to report we will return as the the beers brewed by the transplant South Africans are quite tasty..

NOTE: We are now at Potters Creek CG on Canyon Lake Tx until June 7th…
