5 day mini-vacation in Key West…

Untitled-2 copy

We are back from yet another foray to Key West, Florida… or as it is better known by the locals – The Conch Republic. We have been to the Key West area so much now that when we go across the 7 mile bridge and see the azure waters we feel as if we are coming home…

100_7345Once again we stayed at our friend’s house but this time they were there too… the more the merrier! No sooner  had we arrived at their house a friend of theirs came up the canal on his 34 1/2 foot boat and asked if  we would all like to go on a boat ride… uhhhh Duhhhh, of course we would! So Bonnie and Tom took the four of us on a boat ride to the Key West Harbor and around the island. What a great way to end the day after the long 5 hour drive.

2012-1-10 KW stroll 041The highlight of the next few days was Sharon getting her first ride on a jet ski and my first in over twenty years… or was it thirty? Anyhow it didn’t take long for us to be enjoying jet skiing across the clear and shallow waters. One day we toured the naval base via jet ski and got a good look at the RV park on the base, what a great spot to be able to get if you are retired military!

2012-01-09 Keys Bike Ride 014The next day the waters were flat and we broke out the jet skis once again and had some fun on the water… We made sure to carry our red solo cups so in case we ran across any jet ski friendly waterfront taverns along the way :)

Key West and Shark Valley 095We also ran into our daughter’s boyfriend’s mom, Molly, who was down visiting friends. She asked if we would like to see her husband’s honorarium, a huge sign posted honoring him for his service as a trainer of the Army Special Forces.  Sergeant Major Jerry Dwayne Patton, 40, died on 15 October 2008 during High Altitude High Opening (HAHO) training while assigned to Army USSOCOM preparing for deployment to Afghanistan. He left behind his wife and four sons, they named the water training facility after him. It was quite a nice tribute to honor such a man.

One day while were in Key West it rained 6 inches and much of Key West was flooded. But as many would say… A rainy day in Key West is still better than any day anywhere else… We had a lot of fun in Key West with our friends Jerry and Kathleen and look forward to our next meeting with them down the road…

  1. I've been trying to get to the Keys just once in the past couple of years and have yet to figure out how to get a winter week at any one of the state parks. And here you've been twice in one winter. Am I envious....Oh heavens no! :-)
