Last Days of Peace and Quiet at Canyon Lake, TX…

DSCN1786

Well they finally decided to re-open this COE park on the 16th of May. As soon as we found out I went online to reserve as long as I could and was only able to get another 6 days before I hit a weekend with no openings. Therefore we will leave on Friday after having been here for two months!

The wildlife and birdlife have sure enjoyed the park being closed down for two months as we have seen a lot of animals and birds venturing out in areas where normally hoards of people gather. We even spotted a Bald Eagle and I was fortunate one day to see it catch a rather large fish in Canyon Lake.

We are still enjoying our long walks with no people around. One morning we saw a large bird fly out of a Live Oak tree and we followed to where it landed. We were treated to a sighting of a beautiful Great Horned Owl. After following from tree to tree I was finally able to get some good pictures of it. What a beauty!!!

We have heard a lot of birds singing in the trees in the mornings and have been lucky to see a few of the more colorful birds of the area. I heard a Painted Bunting singing one day and was able to locate it for a photo. I was also lucky to hear a Summer Tanager and chased it down for a picture as well. It is going to be a sad day when this park fills back up!

More yellow flowers are blooming but the heat is coming with forecasted temperatures to be in the mid to upper nineties very soon. With the heat the flowers will soon be gone and replaced by yellowed, dried out vegetation. Spring is nearly over and summer is about to begin.

As Texas has begun to open up people are definitely getting out and about. The river has already become active with tubers again and Canyon Lake is alive with boaters. The park will be filled with campers the day it opens as there are only a few sites not reserved.

Soon it will be time for us to move on…Stay healthy everyone!

NOTE: We are currently sheltering in place at Canyon Lake, Texas until May 22nd when we will move over to Granger Lake near Taylor Texas…

  1. You've been parked in paradise for two months, it'll certainly be different when the park opens. Nice bird sightings!, owl, eagle and those with lots of bright colors.

  2. We left our stay at home place several weeks ago as the campground in Mississippi opened up. Was nervous moving back out into the world so we booked another three week stay elsewhere and now have moved through yet another state since. Every place we go it's good to see people are really practicing social distancing. Ate at a restaurant out in the woods (Rattlesnake Salon in Alabama) for the first time and only two tables had folks there. Going to tip all the waitresses heavily cause they are earning it. Not that we plan to dine out much. There are ways to be safe and we are finding businesses that we must visit to be setup well so far with the new guidelines. Take some gloves for the gas pumps or at least some wipes/sanitizer in the RV. But then again you can wash your hands with the fancy class A.

Karen and I still have good masks so I gave away my N95's to folks taking care of elderly. Had them leftover from home. Kept two for us.

All is well out here; welcome back to the road. Just guessing you are heading to home territory closer in Texas.

  3. Such strange times. Glad to hear you two are doing well. Your bird sightings are wonderful! We've been hoping to see a Painted Bunting here in Apalachicola, but are still waiting. Looks like we're here for a while (a year? more?) so there's till time, LOL. I have to laugh or I'll go crazy.

    1. Lots of painted buntings here but they are so very elusive... at least laughter is good for the soul!

  4. The birds and flowers are so nice. We were shell shocked once we hit Colorado Springs and all of the people. Enjoy your respite from the crowds.

  5. What a great place to be quarantined. I have serious envy. Sorry you couldn't grab more days when they opened up the registrations. Do they normally allow people to book two months or was that just the luck of the lock down? Hope you don't start having trouble finding places to be.

  6. It is going to be weird when we reopen, we've been in partially filled, TX, or almost empty here, IL, campgrounds since the end of March. We too are seeing so much wildlife here, birds have built nest where they normally wouldn't. We're starting to volunteer, doing stuff that's not out in public. No word yet since we still have a shelter in place order till 5/29. Stay safe.
