Wow, we find it hard to believe it has been 5 years since we started fulltiming in our RV! When we started we honestly thought we would be RV fulltiming only 2 to 3 years before finding our next (future) home. However, here we are still enjoying this lifestyle 5 years from the time we departed Texas on March 3, 2011. Crazy…
This year has been one of our most economical years of all which can be attributed mostly due to the price of both diesel and gas. Another factor is that we didn’t put on as many miles as in years past as we only traveled 5782 miles from March 2015 to March 2016. A third factor is we actually stayed in places a bit longer than normal. There is l an interesting trend in our annual expenses over these five years but I will pen another blog about it soon.
This last year we began in Tucson Arizona in March 2015 and ended here at Betty’s RV Park in Abbeville Louisiana. In between Arizona and Louisiana our route took us through the states New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Twelve states were camped in and we also visited Indiana, West Virginia and Washington D.C. by car.
One thing we have learned in these five years on the road is the need to have flexibility built into our travel plans if we want to stay in spring-like weather going north and fall-like weather travelling south to winter. This was the first year we didn’t actually make it to our summer target destination (Maine) as planned because the weather due to El Niño kept us from heading to the Northeast and from exploring Stone Mountain in Georgia. Instead we decided to do the bourbon trail in Kentucky and Tennessee. It turned out to be a really great trip despite the change in plans. We saw many of our old friends along the trail and made some new friends as well which is one of the best things about this lifestyle.
So what does our 6th year have in store for us? We aren’t really sure of our target summer area yet but we are leaning toward revisiting Montana, Oregon and Washington. Who knows for sure but we hope to make firmer plans during our one month stay at our old home town of College Station, the place we began our road of retirement…

ReplyDeleteHappy anniversary to you for sure! Planning months in advance is definitely difficult to do. We have learned that the weather doesn't start showing itself until your plans are already in place.
