We left Canyon Lake for a short 40 mile drive east over to Lockhart State Park for our annual Texas BBQ fix and to renew our Texas State Park Pass. We love this little state park and as we discussed the places we plan to visit in town we drool just thinking about sinking our teeth in some great Texas BBQ in Lockhart.
We pulled into Lockhart State Park and although we didn’t get one of our preferred sites adjacent to the golf course, every site in this state park is a good one. There are so few full hookup sites I made this reservation some time ago to ensure we got a site. We will be in Lockhart on a rigorous four day BBQ diet giving us ample time to feast on BBQ each of those nights!
Our first day we enjoyed the state park and played a to a little disc golf at a nearby park. Afterwards we drove into town to Blacks BBQ and picked up some BBQ brisket and some smoked turkey for dinner. We brought it home because we had prepared side dishes and wanted to have a frosty beverage with our meal. The wonderful smoky aroma was wafting from the delicately sliced brisket and turkey. Blacks BBQ is the oldest BBQ establishment in Lockhart and consistently ranks as one of the best BBQ places in Texas… and thus, the world! It was fantastic!
The next day we drove over to Smitty’s Market BBQ in downtown Lockhart to order up BBQ brisket and a link of jalapeno sausage since they were out of smoked turkey. Although Smitty’s brisket was not as moist or quite as tender as Blacks the rub and the smoke flavor were richer thus receiving my vote as the better of the two. Sharon, however, liked Blacks better.
Our third night we stopped in at the BBQ place Called Chisolm Trail BBQ. Their claim to fame is that it is where the locals eat. We are convinced this is true since we always see locals lined up there and very few “out of towners” like us. Their BBQ is consistently 25% less expensive than the better known stops but truly their brisket rivals their more expensive counterparts. We went right before closing this year and as a result the brisket and turkey we had was a bit drier than normal but still had a fabulous taste and texture. We were late because we had driven over to San Marcos TX to revisit Aqua-Brew Brewery, our new Texas favorite brewery.
We sure are living large right now having good beer and great Texas BBQ in Lockhart. Our last stop is usually Kreuz BBQ (also in Lockhart) but we had not been very happy with their product the last two years we visited so we decided to drive 15 minutes south to another well known and top notch BBQ joint in Lulling Texas called Lulling City Market. I hadn’t eaten there in decades and Sharon had never been so we were excited to try it..
Before going over to Lulling we stopped to visit Seguin Texas and play some disc golf at one of their parks called Max Starcke Park. What a great, but long, disc course in what was once a pecan orchard. Afterwards we checked out the Seguin Brewing Company for a clod craft beer. Not the best beer but they were pretty tasty none the less.
More BBQ brisket and sausage were ordered. Man oh man it was some great BBQ! And it was even less expensive than Chisolm Trail! We really enjoyed it especially knowing it was our last stop this year. Yes, our 4 day Texas BBQ diet is over and each place we visited was excellent with only slight variations in flavor and texture and I even lost some weight (but only in my wallet)!
It has been such a treat for us and we are more than glad we indulged! Any one of these spots are a true road treat. It will tide us over until our next trek through this part of Texas. .We invite you to indulge if you are anywhere near as we promise you won’t be sorry you came….
NOTE: We are moving today over to our former home town, College Station.
Oh yes not I am drooling just thinks about hopefully next year.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I just drooled on my keyboard! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love, love good Texas BBQ. Absolutely nothing is better ... well, I also love good Texas pinto beans and cornbread! :)
ReplyDeleteI trust you for all things Texas. You are my Texas authority so I have just put Lockhart on my Texas wish list. Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteYum, need I say more?
ReplyDeleteWhen our son and his family were living in Austin years ago, they took Beach and I South on a BBQ taste fest to make a comparison with our southern BBQ (which is primarily pork). We jumped in with a knife and fork in one hand and a bottle of antacid in the other hand. The aromas and flavors were fantastic. But we never tried the sausage--something to look forward to with a good beer when we visit again.
