We were only at Tijeras NM for a few nights before we moved the 40 or so miles down the Sandias into Albuquerque where we set up at the Coronado Campground in Bernalillo NM. This will be a longer stay so we can visit friends, experience some more of Albuquerque and explore the surrounding area.
What a pleasant surprise this great little campground was with its fairly large sites each with a casita and picnic table. We had 30 amp service and water, although the water connection was quite far away and took two hoses to connect. The campground is adjacent to the Rio Grande River and offers a fabulous view of the Sandias, especially at sunset. Even better it is situated within walking distance to both a casino and the Bosque Brewing company. Score!!!
One thing we decided to do while here was to take the commuter train to Sante Fe, some 50 plus miles north of here. We caught the train at the Bernalillo Train Stop and took our seats. Cost for this hourlong train ride to and from Sante Fe was $5.00 each for seniors and free for veterans, like me ;).
We always enjoy visiting Sante Fe and walked around town taking in the sights just enjoying the day. We have been there many times before but we had never visited the state capitol so we strolled over to it for a tour the building. It is not really an overly impressive capitol building but we really enjoyed the art and history presented there and the fact that the building is round.
After touring our way around town we walked over to a local favorite restaurant called La Choza. As much as we wanted to eat at the restaurant, the train we wanted to catch was arriving soon so we ordered our late lunch to go. It was hard walking back to the train depot in Sante Fe knowing we we were carrying some luscious enchiladas smothered in both green and red chile (called Christmas tree styled). Once we sat down to eat it, it was well worth the wait….delicious!
One evening we were called by RV friends we met in Playa Bonita at Puerto Penasco, Mexico. We decided to meet Carol and Ed at the brewery behind our RV park, Here we enjoyed adult beverages and adult conversation as the time quickly passed. It was really great to see them and it made us think about one day returning to Puerto Penasco. The brewery has a wonderful view of the Sandia Mountains at sunset so we enjoyed not only our friends but also the panoramic views of the Sandias. Our stay is off to a great start!
NOTE: We are currently at Lake Abiquiu, next up is Chama NM…
Thanks for the tip on the train ride! Much less expensive than the gas would have cost and more relaxing! We paid $20 just to park the RV up there when we visited.

DeleteYou are giving us some good ideas for our visit to NM in Oct. The enchiladas sounds wonderful. Mexican food in Oregon not so great.
