Summer Plans firming up…

routeSo our plans are starting to firm up for the summer and we have decided to continue the trek we started in the spring by heading to the Northeast. We changed our plans this past spring and headed to the Keys in the hope of securing some wintertime work-camping. We feel as if we are not going to end up with anything so instead of staying in the Keys for two months, we will begin our trek north on July 15th with our first stop (a longer drive than I like) in Melbourne, Florida where we will stay a week or so.

From Florida the plan is very flexible as to where we will stay, when we stay, and how long we will stay. Let’s just call it a work in progress. However, we do plan to spend some time exploring the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, Washington D.C., the Boston Metroplex, as well as New York City.

The mapped route to the right shows us going all the way to the Bar Harbor area of Maine but I am not too sure we will make it all the way there since we want to spend some time with a friend in the Adirondacks of New York. We also want to visit the race track in Saratoga Springs in August. We shall see…

If anyone has any suggestions as to routes, places to stay, or places to visit please shoot us an email (Heyduke50@inorbit.com) or leave a comment on the blog, Since we remain very flexible in our plans we appreciate any input you may have!

  1. Bar Harbor is nice as are all the Lobster shacks on the way. If you make it to Maine, and enter the state on highway 1 there is a restaurant just cross the border called Warren's Lobster House that has the best food. (try the blueberry pie.) If you get as far as Ogunquit go to Barnacle Billy's. I highly recommend both places!

  2. Looks like a great trip! If you guys are looking for some cool beach stops we really enjoyed both Jekyll Island GA and Hunting Island SC. If you decide you need to cool off you can always go up into Smoky Mountains and ride some of the Blue Ridge Highway.

  3. Maybe on your return you could take in Niagra Falls and the Adirondack Mountains in upstate NY, they are beautiful (thats where we are from originally)

Also, the Blue Ridge Mountains on your way up are quite a bit inland but they are truly a sight to behold. Not sure I would want to tow the RV up the mountains but you could camp at the base and take a day trip.

  8. Sounds like a great plan. I love the map. How did you do it??

If you travel up I81 consider stopping at Hungry Mother State Park in Marion Virginia. We were there back in April and have a little bit on the blog about it. We've been there many times and have always enjoyed it.

  9. If you are going to be in Washington DC, I can highly recommend a visit to Hillwood (it was the home of Marjorie Merriweather Post). You will need reservations, but boy is it ever worth it. Not only is it a welcome respite from the crowds, it's one of the hidden gems of DC.

Kate and Sherry thanks for the tips - just what we are looking for.

  11. For Washington, D.C. we really loved staying at the Greenbelt Park, part of the National Park system. A 15 minute walk through the woods and down the road and you are at the subway to downtown. Also pick up your free tickets into the White House gardens and National Monument first thing in the morning. Here is our blog from when we stayed at the Greenbelt Park www.travelwithkevinandruth.com/2008/04/greenbelt-park-maryland.html and just hit older post for the next two days that we spent in Washington.
